10 May 2008 - Sakyong interviewed on BBC World Service Radio

The Sakyong, Jamgon Mipham Rinpoche, has been interviewed on BBC World Service Radio as part of the program 'Reporting Religion'. The interview will be broadcast on Sunday 11 May, and posted online at 06:32 GMT. You can listen online for one week until 18 May.

The Sakyong talked to presenter Dan Damon about his own life as a reincarnate lama, the role of Buddhism in the 21st century and the situation in Tibet. The BBC World Service in English has a global audience of over 42 million listeners per week. Rinpoche also recorded an interview for BBC Radio 4, the UK's main national speech radio station, to be broadcast in July.

The interview took place during the Sakyong's recent visit to London, UK, his first public visit in over a decade. After the relative austerity of his retreat in Nepal, the Sakyong presented a public talk on 'Ruling your World' in the opulent setting of Chelsea Town Hall, surrounded by enormous Victorian paintings of English royalty. For photos of this event, please visit this site. While remarking on the hectic pace of London, the Sakyong had the audience laughing to hear that even in Nepal the monks can sometimes be seen answering mobile phones in the midst of a long practice session.

The Sakyong also presented a one-day meditation workshop to a packed audience, captivated by his wisdom and humour: 'We are born, then there is the process of ageing, then we get sick, and then we die... I'm not the first person to tell you this, right?' Participants also enjoyed the down-to-earth meditation instruction from London's own Acharya David Hope, who explained why 'little and often' is preferable in meditation: 'The analogy we make is that it's better to brush your teeth for a few minutes every day, rather than for twenty minutes on a Sunday.'
